PEBs (pre-engineered buildings) were the first standardised engineering designs for buildings commercially available in the 1960s. A pre-engineered building’s primary framing structure has traditionally been an assembly of I-shaped components, referred to as I-beams in common parlance. I beams are commonly used in pre-engineered buildings, and they are typically created by welding together steel plates to form the I section. In the field, the I beams are connected (for example, with bolted connections) to form the whole frame of the pre-engineered building. Some manufacturers taper the framing members (by altering the web depth) in response to the impact of local loading on the structure. Larger plate dimensions are employed in regions with a greater likelihood of load impacts.
